About the author

Born Louisa Lilias Plunket on November 7, 1833, she was an Irish author who later wrote as Louisa Lilias Greene, Louisa Lilias Plunket, Baroness Greene, R. J. Greene, and Louisa Lelias Greene. She is remembered mainly for children’s fiction and for the many books she published during the 19th century.

She was the daughter of the 3rd Baron Plunket and married William Conyngham Greene, a diplomat who was later created Baron Greene. Her writing career ran alongside that public and well-connected family life, and her stories were aimed at young readers in the Victorian period.

Among the books associated with her are The Grey House on the Hill, Filling Up the Chinks, Jubilee Hall; or, There’s No Place Like Home, and On Angels’ Wings. She died on March 30, 1891, leaving behind a body of children’s literature that still appears in library catalogs and public-domain collections.
