Born in Bodmin, Cornwall, Florence Mabel Quiller-Couch was the daughter of physician Thomas Quiller-Couch and Mary Ford. She grew up in a literary family and was the sister of the writer and critic Arthur Quiller-Couch, but built a body of work of her own as an editor, compiler, novelist, and children’s author.
Her books ranged from fiction for younger readers to literary collections, and sources credit her with 26 publications. She also worked with her younger sister Lilian Mary Quiller-Couch, who was a writer too; together they produced Ancient and Holy Wells of Cornwall, a title that reflects the sisters’ interest in Cornish history and folklore.
Readers who enjoy gentle early-20th-century storytelling may know her through The Carroll Girls. Her life seems to have remained closely tied to family, and later accounts note that she lived with Lilian in Hampstead after an unhappy romance.
