About the author

Born in Haarlem in 1820 and later based in Leiden, Matthias de Vries built his career around the history and structure of Dutch language and literature. He became a leading scholar in the field at a time when Dutch philology was taking on a more modern, systematic form.

He is especially associated with the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (Dictionary of the Dutch Language), the vast dictionary project he helped launch and guide. His work as a lexicographer and professor gave him a lasting place in Dutch intellectual history, and his name is still closely tied to the serious study of Dutch words, texts, and spelling.

De Vries died in 1892, but his influence lasted far beyond his lifetime. For listeners interested in language, literature, and the making of dictionaries, he stands out as one of the key figures behind the scholarly understanding of Dutch.
