About the author

Born in Weimar in 1801, Ludwig Bechstein became a German writer, librarian, and collector of folk material. He is remembered above all for preserving and retelling fairy tales and legends, especially in works such as Deutsches Märchenbuch (German Fairy Tale Book), which helped spread traditional stories far beyond their local origins.

His early life was difficult, but his circumstances improved after he was taken in by relatives. Over time he built a literary career that included poetry, fiction, and historical and folkloric writing. He was also closely connected with Meiningen, where he worked as a librarian.

Although the Brothers Grimm are often more famous today, Bechstein was widely read in the 19th century and was an important figure in popularizing German storytelling traditions. He died in 1860, leaving behind a body of work that still appeals to readers who love folklore, wonder, and old-world tales.
