About the author

Lucy Gray is an American photographer and writer whose published work includes Balancing Acts: Three Prima Ballerinas Becoming Mothers and photographs for In Nevada: The Land, the People, God, and Chance. Her work has also appeared in outlets such as Elle, Interview, and American Theater Magazine.

Balancing Acts follows three San Francisco Ballet dancers over many years, focusing on the challenge of building both artistic careers and family lives. The project reflects the kind of storytelling that runs through Gray’s work: intimate, observant, and deeply interested in the lives people build behind the scenes.

Gray has also been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, where she has been featured in connection with her work. Across photography and prose, she brings a documentary eye and a warm, clear voice to stories about performance, women’s lives, and the American landscape.
