About the author

Born Lilian Lida Bell in Chicago in 1867 and raised in Atlanta, she became an American novelist and travel writer whose books found a wide readership on both sides of the Atlantic. She studied at Dearborn Seminary in Chicago and began writing very young, later turning her early newspaper experience into a more serious literary career.

Bell is especially remembered for fiction such as The Love Affairs of an Old Maid, along with books including At Home with the Jardines, Hope Loring, Abroad with the Jimmies, The Interference of Patricia, and A Book of Girls. Contemporary accounts described her as a successful and widely read author, and her writing was often noted for its energy, humor, and interest in everyday social life.

She also wrote under the name Mrs. Arthur Hoyt Bogue after her marriage in 1900. Bell died in 1929, leaving behind a body of work that captures the tastes and voice of a highly popular American author from her era.
