About the author

Born Elizabeth Louisa Moresby in 1862, she was the daughter of British admiral John Moresby and later wrote under several names, including L. Adams Beck, E. Barrington, and Louis Moresby. She produced novels, short stories, biographies, and esoteric works, building a reputation for books that blended storytelling with strong interests in history, religion, and the cultures of Asia.

Much of her life was marked by travel. She spent time in places including China and Japan, and those experiences strongly influenced her fiction and nonfiction alike. Although she began publishing books relatively late in life, she was highly productive in the 1920s, especially after settling in Canada, and became a distinctive voice in popular historical and imaginative writing of her era.

Her work often moves between romance, spiritual curiosity, and adventurous settings, which gives it a flavor quite different from many of her contemporaries. She died in Kyoto, Japan, on January 3, 1931, leaving behind a varied body of work that still attracts readers interested in historical fiction, early fantasy, and cross-cultural themes.
