Description

Set against the soaring heights of the Himalayas, a narrow, ancient trail winds from Simla toward the forbidden valleys of Tibet. The narrator, a restless traveler, is drawn to a secluded lodge known only as the House in the Woods, a place where hospitality is stripped to its essentials and the surrounding deodar forest seems to guard centuries‑old secrets. The invitation arrives through an old friend who has uncovered the legend of a forgotten palace—the Hall of Pleasure—once built by a Rajput ruler for an unseen bride. Intrigued by the ruins’ whispered tales of love, loss, and vanished splendor, he accepts a rare permit to stay, hoping the remote refuge will reveal the story behind the ruined beauty.

Inside the timbered bungalow, the air is crisp and the mountain stream murmurs beside it, while a solitary khansamah prepares plain meals that echo the austerity of the setting. As the traveler settles in, the quiet solitude gives way to lingering mysteries about the ancient palace, its vanished princess, and the fate of the Maharao who vanished into the woods. The first act of the story invites listeners to feel the weight of history and the pull of an untamed landscape, promising an exploration of legend and the thin line between myth and memory.
