About the author

Born in Arnhem on September 13, 1809, L. A. te Winkel — usually identified as Lamert Allard te Winkel — was a Dutch linguist and lexicographer. He is remembered above all for his work on Dutch spelling and for his role in the creation of the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal, one of the major dictionary projects in Dutch.

Working together with Matthias de Vries, he helped establish the spelling system later known as the De Vries and Te Winkel spelling. That work gave him a lasting place in the history of the Dutch language, because it aimed to make spelling more systematic at a time when written Dutch still lacked full standardization.

Te Winkel died in Leiden on April 24, 1868. Though he is not widely known outside specialist circles today, his influence has reached generations of readers, writers, teachers, and students through the rules and reference works he helped shape.
