Juan Villagonzalo Irles was a Cebuano writer associated with the early growth of fiction in the Cebuano language. Sources describe him as being born in Ronda, Cebu, in 1886, and note that he studied at the Seminario de San Carlos in Cebu City and later at Cebu’s Escuela Normal.
He is best known for Wala’y Igsoon (1912), which is described in literary references as his only novel. Cebuano literary histories credit him as the first to write a Cebuano novel, giving his work an important place in the development of regional literature in the Philippines.
