About the author

Born in Granada on November 24, 1829, Juan Facundo Riaño studied philosophy, literature, and law at the University of Granada, later earning a doctorate in law in Madrid. He also studied Arabic, an interest that shaped his work on Spain’s Islamic past and on monuments such as the Alhambra.

Riaño became professor of fine arts at the Escuela Superior de Diplomática in 1863 and was widely regarded as an expert in decorative arts. From 1870 he served as an adviser to London’s South Kensington Museum, the institution that later became the Victoria and Albert Museum, helping with the acquisition of Spanish antiquities. He also directed Madrid’s Museo de Reproducciones Artísticas and belonged to Spain’s royal academies of history, language, and fine arts.

Alongside his scholarly work, he also held public office, serving as director general of public instruction, a deputy, a senator, and for a time minister of state. He died in Madrid on February 27, 1901, leaving behind studies that connected Spanish medieval and Islamic art with a broader international audience.
