Joseph Tinker

Best known in American sports history as Joe Tinker, he was a star shortstop for the Chicago Cubs and later a manager, remembered as part of the famous “Tinker to Evers to Chance” double-play trio. His name still echoes far beyond baseball because of that lasting place in the game’s early story.

About the author

Born in Kansas in 1880, Joseph Bert Tinker built his reputation as one of baseball’s standout shortstops in the early 20th century. He spent most of his major league career with the Chicago Cubs, helping the club win multiple National League pennants and two World Series titles, and he was widely admired for his defense and speed.

He later played for Cincinnati and the Chicago Whales, and also managed in professional baseball. Tinker was eventually elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946, a sign of how strongly his career was remembered even decades after his playing days.

Although the name “Joseph Tinker” may look literary at first glance, the reliable sources I found point to the famous ballplayer better known as Joe Tinker rather than a novelist or general author. He died in 1948, but his place in baseball history remains especially memorable thanks to the legendary infield phrase “Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
