About the author

Born in Paris in 1864, he spent part of his childhood on Réunion Island and went on to become one of France’s major scholars of medieval literature. He studied under the influential philologist Gaston Paris, later taught at the Collège de France, and was elected to the Académie française.

He is especially remembered for his work on medieval French texts, including studies of epic poetry and the Tristan tradition. His retelling of Tristan and Iseult became widely admired for making a complex medieval legend feel vivid and readable without losing its old-world atmosphere.

Alongside his literary work, he played an important role in shaping how medieval French texts were edited and understood in the modern era. He died in 1938, leaving behind a body of scholarship that still matters to readers interested in legend, romance, and the long history of French storytelling.
