About the author

Born in 1831, Josef Sokol was a Czech writer, teacher, and translator whose work reached many readers in the second half of the 19th century. He studied and later taught, and he became known not only for fiction but also for educational and language-related writing.

Sokol wrote historical novels, tales, and other prose, often drawing on Czech history and everyday life. Alongside his literary work, he was active in education and public cultural life, which helped make him a familiar name in his time.

He died in 1912. Today he is remembered as one of the many 19th-century Czech authors who linked literature with national culture, learning, and popular reading.
