About the author

Born on July 4, 1831, in Horní Jelení and later active in Prague, Josef Sokol was a Czech educator, writer, journalist, and politician. He is remembered not only for public service, including seats in the Bohemian Diet and the Imperial Council, but also for his steady work on behalf of schools and teachers.

As an author, he wrote and co-wrote practical educational books, including reading textbooks and guides for classroom instruction. His published work shows a strong interest in everyday teaching, school reading, and the training of teachers, which helped make him a familiar name in Czech educational circles of his time.

Sokol died in Prague on April 4, 1912. Today he is chiefly recalled as one of those 19th-century figures who linked public life with the patient, practical work of improving education.
