About the author

Born in São Filipe on the island of Fogo in 1869, José Nozolini Barbosa was a Portuguese journalist, writer, and politician of Cape Verdean origin. He is often referred to simply as José Barbosa, and he built his reputation first through journalism, becoming an influential republican commentator in the final years of Portugal’s constitutional monarchy.

After the establishment of the Portuguese Republic, he remained active in public life and was associated with the Unionist Party. He served as a deputy and was twice appointed Minister of the Colonies, though one of those brief governments never took office. During the First World War, he was also entrusted with secret negotiations involving Portugal and its allies.

Barbosa later directed the Lisbon newspaper A Lucta and was serving as president of the Conselho Superior de Finanças when he died in Lisbon in 1923. His life joined literature, journalism, and politics in a way that reflects the restless, argumentative energy of early twentieth-century Portuguese public culture.
