About the author

Born in 1869, José Barbosa was a Portuguese journalist, political writer, and committed republican. Sources consulted during this search describe him as the founder of the republican newspaper Pátria and note that he spent years in exile, living in Spain, France, and Brazil between 1894 and 1908.

After the Portuguese Republic was established in 1910, he went on to hold public office, including roles connected to the Ministry of the Interior, and he was elected as a deputy in the 1911 Constituent elections. His writing also reached beyond day-to-day politics: As relações luso-brasileiras reflects his interest in immigration, national identity, and the cultural relationship between Portugal and Brazil.

He died in 1923. Even in a brief overview, he stands out as a figure whose journalism and public life were closely intertwined, shaped by political struggle, exile, and the debates of his time.
