About the author

Born in Venlo in 1869, Jos. Schrijnen was a Dutch priest, classicist, linguist, and folklorist. He studied in Leuven and Paris, was ordained as a priest in 1894, and went on to build a career that combined church life with serious scholarship.

His work ranged across classical philology, linguistics, and the study of popular traditions. He is often noted for his book Nederlandsche Volkskunde (1917), an important early survey of Dutch folk culture, and for helping establish folklore as a field of study in the Netherlands.

Schrijnen was also one of the founders of the Catholic University of Nijmegen and, in 1923, became its first rector magnificus. He died in Nijmegen in 1938, leaving behind a reputation as a wide-ranging scholar who connected language, history, and everyday cultural life.
