About the author

Born in Brunswick, Maine, in 1805, John Stevens Cabot Abbott was an American minister, editor, and prolific author. He studied at Bowdoin College and later at Andover Theological Seminary, and for a time served as a Congregational pastor before turning more fully to writing.

Abbott wrote a large number of historical works, biographies, and religious books for general readers. He is especially remembered for his popular lives of major European rulers and military leaders, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon III, Louis XIV, and Marie Antoinette, as well as for writing accessible history in a warm, dramatic style.

He was also the brother of writer Jacob Abbott, and together they belonged to a family deeply involved in 19th-century American religious and literary life. Abbott died in 1877, leaving behind a body of work that helped shape how many ordinary readers encountered history in his era.
