Born in Brunswick, Maine, in 1805, John Stevens Cabot Abbott was an American historian, pastor, and educational writer. He studied at Bowdoin College and later at Andover Theological Seminary, and he was the younger brother of writer Jacob Abbott, with whom he was connected in educational work.
Abbott wrote extensively for general readers, producing biographies, histories, and books for young people. His best-known work is The History of Napoleon Bonaparte, and much of his writing focused on major historical and political figures, presented in an accessible, lively style.
He died in 1877 in Connecticut. Today, he is remembered as a prolific 19th-century popular historian whose books helped bring world history and biography to a broad American readership.
