About the author
Born in Brunswick, Maine, in 1805, John Stevens Cabot Abbott studied at Bowdoin College and Andover Theological Seminary before serving as a Congregational minister in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He was the brother of writer Jacob Abbott, and the two also worked together in educational publishing.
Abbott is best remembered as a prolific author of history, biography, religion, and family guidance. After the success of The Mother at Home, he turned increasingly to writing, producing widely read books such as The History of Napoleon Bonaparte, History of the French Revolution, and lives of figures including Christopher Columbus, David Crockett, and Marie Antoinette.
His historical works were written for general readers rather than specialists, with a clear, dramatic style that made complex events feel immediate and personal. He died in 1877, leaving behind a large body of accessible nonfiction that reflects the moral and educational spirit of 19th-century American publishing.
