About the author

Born in London in 1822, John Leighton became known as an English artist whose work was especially admired in book illustration and book cover design. He built a reputation during the Victorian period for making books look beautiful as well as readable, combining decorative skill with a storyteller’s eye.

Leighton was more than an illustrator. He also wrote and illustrated some of his own works, using the pseudonym Luke Limner, and his interests ranged across design, ornament, and the visual culture of books. His long career connected him with the rich world of 19th-century publishing, where the look of a volume could be almost as memorable as the text inside.

He lived a remarkably long life, dying in 1912 on his 90th birthday. Today he is remembered as one of the notable figures in Victorian book art, admired for helping shape the appearance of illustrated books in an age when the printed object itself was treated as a work of art.
