About the author

Born in Rotterdam on October 23, 1833, he studied literature at Utrecht from 1853 to 1860 and completed a doctoral dissertation there in 1860. He later became conrector at the Latin school in Doesburg and, in 1868, rector of the Latin school in Tiel.

He spent much of his career in education. During his years in Tiel, the school developed from a Latin school into a progymnasium in 1879 and then into a full gymnasium in 1888, showing how closely his work was tied to classical learning and teaching.

His writing was equally practical and scholarly. He published works on Roman antiquities, ancient geography, Latin usage, and editions for students, and he also wrote sketches and novellas. Together with Z. C. de Boer, he produced Woordenboek der Grieksche en Romeinsche oudheid (1890), a reference work created to make the Greek and Roman world more accessible to learners. He died in Tiel on July 23, 1901.
