About the author

Born in Girona in 1848 and later based in Barcelona, Joaquim Riera i Bertran studied law at the University of Barcelona and briefly worked as a judge. Alongside that professional path, he built a wide-ranging literary career and became known as both a writer and a public intellectual in Catalan cultural life.

He was closely connected with the Renaixença, the 19th-century Catalan literary and cultural revival. He contributed to important periodicals of the era, including La Renaixença, Lo Gai Saber, La Il·lustració Catalana, and La Tomasa, and he also took part in the Floral Games tradition, eventually being named Mestre en Gai Saber in 1890.

Riera i Bertran was active in politics as well as letters: he was linked to the federal republican movement, served as mayor of Girona in 1873, and later presided over organizations such as the Unió Catalanista and the Associació Catalana d’Excursions Científiques. His work across poetry, theater, prose, journalism, and civic life makes him a vivid example of how closely literature and public engagement could be intertwined in late 19th-century Catalonia.
