Born in Barcelona on June 28, 1850, Joan Pons i Massaveu was a Catalan poet and costumbrista writer. He worked as a merchant and built his literary education on his own, an unusual path that helped give his writing a grounded, observant feel.

He began to make a name for himself in the 1870s, first in La Renaixença as a poet and later as a prose writer. He also contributed to several Catalan literary magazines, including L’Escut de Catalunya, L’Aureneta, La Il·lustració Catalana, and Revista de Catalunya.

Pons i Massaveu is remembered especially for writing that drew on popular customs and urban life in Barcelona. He died on March 3, 1918, leaving behind work closely tied to the Catalan literary world of his time.
