About the author

Born in Turku on March 19, 1838, Josef Julius Wecksell grew up to become one of the most admired Finland-Swedish literary voices of the 19th century. He studied at the University of Helsinki and showed striking talent while still young, earning attention as both a poet and a dramatist.

Wecksell wrote in Swedish, and his work became known for its emotional force, lyrical beauty, and romantic mood. Among his best-known works is the poem Nocturne, and his play Daniel Hjort helped secure his reputation during his brief productive period.

His career was cut short after he became seriously ill in the mid-1860s, and he spent much of the rest of his life in psychiatric care. He died in Helsinki on August 9, 1907, but his small body of work continued to live on, giving him a lasting place in Finnish literature.
