About the author

Born in 1838, Josef Julius Wecksell was a Finnish poet and playwright who studied at the University of Helsinki. He wrote in Swedish and became known for his poetic voice as well as for drama, earning a place among notable literary figures of his time.

His life took a tragic turn when he was committed to psychiatric care in 1865. He spent the rest of his life in institutions, including Endenich asylum and later Lappvik asylum, where he remained until his death in 1907.

Even with a career cut short, Wecksell's work continued to be remembered for its emotional intensity and literary grace. Today he is often seen as a striking example of brilliant early talent whose writing outlasted the difficult circumstances of his life.
