About the author

Born Ingeborg "Immi" Hellén in Kuorevesi, Finland, in 1861, she became known as a poet, teacher, and writer. Reliable sources agree that she is especially remembered for children’s poems and nursery rhymes, which made her one of the enduring voices of Finnish childhood reading and song.

Hellén trained as a teacher and worked in education, a background that fits naturally with the clarity and gentleness of her best-known writing. Sources also note that she wrote more broadly than children’s verse, including novels for girls and a play with Christian themes.

She died in Helsinki in 1937, but her work continued to circulate long afterward. Collections of her poems were published later, and several of her lyrics remained widely recognized in Finland through song and recitation.
