Born in Linz in 1920, he trained as a doctor and later worked in psychiatry, neurology, and public medicine in Austria. Alongside his medical career, he built a substantial literary life, writing fiction, essays, poetry, and radio plays.
Friedl was associated with major Austrian literary circles, including the Graz Authors' Assembly and PEN Club Liechtenstein. His writing earned notable recognition over the years, including the Adalbert-Stifter-Preis and the Culture Prize of the City of Linz.
He died in Steyr in 1988. Remembered as both a physician and a literary voice, he stands out for bringing psychological insight and human complexity into his storytelling.
