About the author

Born near Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, in 1817, Henry Harbaugh was an American minister and writer in the German Reformed Church. Reliable biographical sources describe him as a prominent churchman as well as an author, and note that he came from a family with deep roots in the Reformed tradition.

Harbaugh served as a pastor and also wrote extensively for religious readers. He was remembered for devotional and literary work that blended faith, sentiment, and everyday Christian reflection, and he also worked as an editor within the church press.

He died in 1867, but his writings continued to be associated with 19th-century German Reformed life in the United States. Today he is chiefly of interest as both a clergyman and a religious author whose books reflect the tone and values of his era.
