About the author

Born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1880, Henry Noble MacCracken grew up in an academic family and studied at New York University and Harvard. Before arriving at Vassar, he taught English at several colleges, building a reputation as a literary scholar.

In 1915 he became the fifth president of Vassar College and its first secular president, serving until 1946—the longest presidency in the college's history. His years there were marked by expansion and modernization, and Vassar's own archives note that after he was dismissed in 1918 because of his views during World War I, protests from students and faculty helped bring him back.

MacCracken was also a writer and editor, with work ranging from medieval literature to regional history. He died in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1970, remembered both as a campus leader and as a lifelong man of letters.
