About the author

Born in Roden in the Netherlands on 17 March 1859, Hindericus Scheepstra trained as a teacher and later worked in education in places including Drachten, Dokkum, Arnhem, and Groningen. He combined teaching with writing, and that close connection to school life shows clearly in his books.

Scheepstra is best known for the Ot en Sien stories, created in collaboration with educator Jan Ligthart and illustrator Cornelis Jetses. These books became a familiar part of Dutch childhood in the early twentieth century, presenting simple scenes from everyday life in a style that was easy for young readers to follow.

He died in Groningen on 8 May 1913, but his work remained widely known for decades. Today he is remembered not only as a children’s author, but also as an educator whose writing left a lasting mark on Dutch reading culture.
