About the author

Born Gustav Meyer in Vienna in 1868, he wrote under the name Gustav Meyrink and is remembered as an Austrian novelist, translator, dramatist, and former banker. He spent important years in Prague, a city that deeply shaped his imagination and later became the haunting setting of his most famous book, The Golem.

Before becoming widely known as a novelist, he wrote satirical pieces for magazines including Simplicissimus. His fiction often drew on interests in mysticism, occult traditions, and spiritual searching, which gave his stories their distinctive dreamlike atmosphere.

Published in book form in 1915, The Golem became his best-known work and helped secure his place in fantastic literature. Meyrink died in 1932 in Starnberg, Bavaria, but his novels still attract readers who enjoy dark, symbolic stories where the everyday world opens onto something far more unsettling.
