About the author

Born in Vienna in 1868 as Gustav Meyer, Gustav Meyrink became one of the best-known German-language writers of supernatural fiction. Before turning fully to literature, he worked in banking, and his unusual life experiences helped shape the dark, searching tone of his fiction.

He is most famous for the 1915 novel The Golem, a haunting story set in Prague that helped secure his reputation far beyond the German-speaking world. His novels and stories often blend the occult, psychological tension, satire, and spiritual questioning, giving them a distinctive atmosphere that still feels unsettling and modern.

Meyrink also worked as a translator and wrote other notable novels including The Green Face and Walpurgis Night. He died in 1932, but his books continue to attract readers who enjoy literary fantasy, strange fiction, and stories that linger in the mind.
