Born in Vienna in 1868, Gustav Meyrink wrote under a pseudonym and first worked in banking, spending important years in Prague. That city’s legends, alleyways, and occult reputation left a deep mark on his imagination and later became central to his fiction.
He is remembered above all for The Golem, a novel that brought him wide attention and is still his most famous work. Across his novels, stories, and translations, he blended fantasy, the supernatural, dark humor, and spiritual interests in a way that made his writing feel both unsettling and memorable.
Meyrink died in 1932. He remains an important early master of strange fiction, especially for readers drawn to haunted cities, symbolic storytelling, and the borderland between dream and reality.
