About the author

Born in Haining, Zhejiang, Wang Guowei (1877–1927) became known as an unusually wide-ranging thinker. He studied Chinese classics and later engaged deeply with Japanese and Western ideas, building a reputation as a scholar who could move comfortably between philosophy, literature, history, and philology.

He is especially remembered for his work on literary criticism and aesthetics, including important studies of ci poetry and traditional Chinese drama. He also made major contributions to the study of ancient history and epigraphy, using newly available inscriptional and archaeological evidence to illuminate China’s past.

Wang’s life unfolded during a time of huge political and cultural change in China, and his work reflects both deep respect for classical tradition and a serious interest in new methods of inquiry. Though his life was cut short in 1927, he remains a central figure in modern Chinese scholarship and literary thought.
