About the author

Born in Linz on July 9, 1891, Grete von Urbanitzky became known as an Austrian-born novelist, journalist, and translator. She studied in Linz and Zurich, later also attending the universities of Zurich and Vienna, and began publishing at a young age.

She was a remarkably productive writer whose novels were often described as popular or entertainment fiction, but her books regularly engaged with bigger questions about women’s independence, artistic life, and social expectations. Her work is also noted for addressing themes such as female identity and same-sex desire, topics that were unusual and striking for their time.

Urbanitzky spent parts of her career working in journalism and cultural life as well as fiction. She died in Geneva on November 4, 1974, and remains an interesting figure for readers curious about overlooked women writers of the German-speaking world.
