About the author

Born in Magdeburg on November 25, 1878, he first trained for a business career and even worked in Argentina before illness brought him back to Germany. During his recovery he began writing, and he went on to become one of the central playwrights of German Expressionism.

He was remarkably prolific, writing dozens of plays across a range of styles. Among his best-known works are From Morn to Midnight, The Burghers of Calais, and the Gas trilogy, dramas that often explore modern life, industry, power, and the pressures placed on the individual.

His work was hugely important in the theater of the Weimar Republic, where he was among the most frequently performed dramatists. After the Nazi rise to power, he left Germany and later died in Ascona, Switzerland, on June 4, 1945.
