About the author

Born in Magdeburg in 1878, Georg Kaiser became one of the most frequently performed playwrights of the Weimar era. He wrote with remarkable energy and range, but he is especially remembered for Expressionist drama, using urgent language and striking theatrical situations to explore modern life, industry, and spiritual crisis.

His major works include From Morn to Midnight, The Burghers of Calais, and the Gas trilogy. Although his style shifted over time, his plays consistently pushed against realism and searched for new ways to stage inner conflict, social pressure, and the pace of the modern world.

Kaiser's career was deeply affected by the upheavals of 20th-century Germany. He later lived in exile in Switzerland, where he died in 1945. Today he remains an important figure in European theatre history, especially for readers and listeners interested in the daring experiments of Expressionism.
