About the author

Born in Pretzsch in 1785, Johann Gottlob Friedrich Wieck became a prominent German piano and voice teacher, as well as a piano store owner and music writer. He studied theology before turning fully toward music, and he built his reputation through teaching, publishing, and a strong interest in how musicians should be trained.

He is most often remembered for educating his daughter Clara Wieck, later Clara Schumann, whose early career he carefully directed, and for teaching Robert Schumann as well. Accounts of his life often note both sides of his legacy: he was an exacting, highly influential pedagogue, but he is also closely tied to the long conflict over Clara’s marriage to Schumann.

Wieck spent much of his career in Leipzig and later in Dresden, where he continued teaching and writing. He died in 1873 in Loschwitz near Dresden, leaving behind a complicated but important place in 19th-century musical life.
