Born in Stargard in Pomerania on December 11, 1870, Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Giese became a German linguist and Orientalist best known for his work in Turkology. He is associated especially with the study of Ottoman Turkish and with careful work on texts, language, and source criticism.

His scholarly career included important years at the University of Breslau, where he served from 1920 to 1936 and was appointed full professor in 1928. He published on Turkish language and folklore, edited and translated major texts, and is particularly remembered for his work on Ottoman historical sources, including the text often known as Anonymus Giese.

Giese died in Eichwalde near Berlin on October 19, 1944. Colleagues regarded him as an important representative of German Oriental studies, and his writings continued to be cited by later researchers working on Turkish language, literature, and historiography.
