About the author

Born in Lier, Belgium, in 1886, Felix Timmermans was a self-taught writer and artist who went on to write novels, poems, plays, and religious works. He is especially associated with Flemish literature, and reference sources describe him as one of the most translated authors from Flanders.

His best-known book is Pallieter, a lively novel that helped make his name internationally. Across his work, he was known for writing with warmth and visual detail, often drawing on village life, Catholic spirituality, and historical subjects.

Timmermans died in Lier in 1947, the same town where he was born. Alongside his writing, he also worked as a draftsman and painter, which helps explain the vivid, pictorial quality many readers notice in his prose.
