About the author

Born in Lier, Belgium, in 1886, Felix Timmermans was a Flemish writer, poet, painter, and illustrator. He had little formal schooling and first worked in his father's lace business, but he went on to build a remarkably broad creative career.

He is best known for Pallieter (1916), a novel whose joyful, earthy spirit made it his signature work. Timmermans also wrote historical fiction, religious works, plays, and poetry, and his books were translated widely, giving him an audience far beyond Flanders.

His writing is often remembered for its affection for ordinary people, nature, and local life, balanced by a strong visual imagination that likely owes something to his work as an artist. He died in Lier in 1947, leaving behind one of the most recognizable bodies of work in 20th-century Flemish literature.
