by Félicité Lefèvre
Félicité Lefèvre (1867–1941) was a children’s author whose surviving bibliography includes The Cock, the Mouse and the Little Red Hen, Soldier Boy, Little Henry and the Tiger, and Papa Peacock. Her best-known book, The Cock, the Mouse and the Little Red Hen, was published in 1907 as an old tale retold and was illustrated by Tony Sarg.
Little verified biographical information about Lefèvre has survived, and some modern catalog records give differing birth details. What remains clear is her focus on accessible storytelling: animal characters, traditional tales, and short adventures designed to entertain young readers and work well as read-alouds.
Her books continued to appear in later editions and library collections, helping preserve the warm, imaginative quality of her stories for new generations.
