About the author

Born in Kustavi on September 22, 1844, Evald Ferdinand Jahnsson was a Finnish author, teacher, and priest. He wrote in both Finnish and Swedish, and his career connected literature, education, journalism, and church work.

Jahnsson wrote at a time when Finnish-language culture was gaining strength, and his work helped bring that movement to ordinary readers. He is known for historical plays and fiction, and scholars have described his 1884 novel Hatanpään Heikki ja hänen morsiamensa as the first historical novel published in Finnish.

He died in Turku on September 7, 1895. Although he is not widely known outside Finland today, his writing remains part of the story of how Finnish literature grew in the nineteenth century.
