The first act unfolds on the sun‑dappled courtyard of the Kuusniemi farm in South Ostrobothnia. A halting country dance leaves the young villagers sprawled on the grass, while Taavi, his sister Elli, and the lively girls Reeta and Kaisa trade teasing barbs about fire, flirty glances, and the sparkle of glass beads. Their rapid, witty exchanges reveal a mix of courtship games and a subtle rivalry that pulses beneath the rustic chatter.
As the evening deepens, the characters’ personalities sharpen: the stern house‑master Voipala watches from the doorway, the violinist drifts between the groups, and a troupe of local lads and maidens adds a restless hum. Though the scene remains light‑hearted, a thread of longing and the fear of being “consumed” by desire begins to surface, hinting at deeper conflicts to come. The play will later leap six years, promising to show how these early sparks have reshaped the lives of the farm’s inhabitants.
