About the author

Emma Elizabeth Thoyts was an English palaeographer, historian, and genealogist born in Marylebone on July 8, 1860. She grew up at Sulhamstead House in Berkshire, and that local setting shaped much of her historical writing.

She wrote widely about Berkshire, nearby villages, and the families connected with them. She also transcribed parish registers and became known for her skill in reading old handwriting, which helped make difficult archival material more accessible to other researchers.

Among her best-known works is The Key to the Family Deed Chest, a practical guide to deciphering and studying old documents. She died in 1949, remembered for combining local history with the patient, exact work of studying original records.
