About the author

Born in Mount Abu, India, on November 4, 1862, he was brought to England as a child and grew up in Devon, a region that would shape much of his writing. Before turning fully to literature, he spent about ten years working in insurance and also studied for the stage.

He went on to become an enormously productive author, publishing novels, plays, poems, and short fiction across a long career. He is especially associated with books set on Dartmoor and elsewhere in Devon, where the land, weather, and local life often feel as important as the characters.

Readers who enjoy richly drawn settings and late Victorian or early twentieth-century storytelling often find a great deal to like in his work. He died in Devon on December 29, 1960, after a career that left a large and varied body of writing.
