About the author

Born in Mount Abu, India, on November 4, 1862, he was educated in Plymouth, Devon, after returning to England as a child. Before literature became his full-time life, he spent about a decade working for the Sun Fire Office and also studied for the stage.

He went on to build an exceptionally large body of work as a novelist, poet, and dramatist. Reference sources consistently note him for fiction rooted in Devon, often compared in spirit to regional writing by Thomas Hardy, with the landscapes and local life of Dartmoor becoming a defining feature of his books.

Phillpotts lived a very long life and died near Exeter, Devon, on December 29, 1960. His writing remains especially interesting for readers who enjoy classic storytelling with a strong sense of place.
