About the author

Born in British India in 1862 and raised in England, Eden Phillpotts became one of the most productive popular writers of his time. He wrote in several forms, including novels, short stories, drama, and poetry, and built a wide readership with fiction rooted in the West Country, especially Dartmoor.

His books often drew readers in with their atmosphere as much as their plots. Rural communities, local speech, and the feel of the Devon landscape appear again and again in his work, giving many of his stories a distinctive setting that helped them stand out.

Phillpotts continued publishing for many years and died in 1960. He is still remembered above all for the sheer range of his output and for the way he turned Dartmoor into one of the most memorable literary landscapes in English popular fiction.
