The story opens on a bright June day in the bucolic village of Bridetown, where a solemn funeral gathers a colourful crowd beneath a sycamore’s shade. Though the sun crowns the thatched cottages with roses and honeysuckle, the villagers move in black bands, their faces a mix of grief and quiet curiosity. The narrator paints the river, the cliffs, and the bustling gardens with such detail that listeners can almost hear the distant toll of St. Mary's bells.
In the midst of this pastoral tableau, a young woman named Sabina watches the proceedings, her thoughts drifting between the ceremony and the secrets whispered in the town’s winding lanes. As the crowd swells and the atmosphere tightens, subtle conflicts among the townspeople begin to surface, hinting at hidden ambitions and old resentments. Listeners are drawn into a world where ordinary life and underlying tension spin together, promising a richly textured tale of community, memory, and the choices that bind them.
