About the author

Born in Poitiers on March 4, 1826, Elme-Marie Caro was a French philosopher, essayist, and literary critic. He studied at the École Normale and later taught philosophy before becoming known for books and essays on religion, modern thought, and major literary figures.

Caro built a reputation as a graceful public writer who engaged with the big arguments of the 19th century, especially around skepticism, positivism, and spiritual belief. He also wrote studies of authors including George Sand, showing the same interest in ideas as in literature.

He was elected to the Académie française in 1874, a sign of the prominence he had reached in French intellectual life. He died in Paris on July 13, 1887.
