About the author

Born in Poitiers on March 4, 1826, Elme-Marie Caro was a French philosopher, essayist, and literary critic. He studied at the Collège Stanislas and the École Normale, graduating in 1848, and went on to build a reputation as a gifted lecturer and writer.

Caro became known for books that explored philosophy, religion, and literature, including studies of George Sand and Goethe, as well as works engaging with materialism and contemporary thought. His writing was admired for being intelligent and accessible, bringing serious ideas to a broad reading public.

He was elected to the Académie française in 1874, a sign of the esteem he had earned in French intellectual life. Caro died in Paris on July 13, 1887.
