About the author
The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle is not an individual author but a long-running literary program of Chautauqua Institution. It was founded in 1878 by John Heyl Vincent as part of a broader educational mission: to encourage reading, self-study, and access to learning for people who could not attend college.
In its early years, the CLSC functioned as a structured four-year course of reading, and it quickly attracted thousands of participants. Local reading circles spread across the United States, helping turn the program into an influential model for adult education, home reading, and community discussion.
Today, the CLSC continues as a shared-reading tradition at Chautauqua, selecting books of literary quality each season and inviting authors to present their work. Its long history gives it a special place in American literary culture, linking the 19th-century movement for self-education with a still-active community of readers.
