About the author
The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, often called the CLSC, was created at Chautauqua Institution in 1878. Chautauqua Institution describes it as a long-running center of adult education, and the CLSC is widely recognized as one of the oldest continuous book clubs in the United States.
In its early years, the CLSC offered a four-year course of guided reading for people pursuing systematic study at home. Historical material from Chautauqua and library archives shows that it encouraged reading across literature, history, science, art, and other subjects, helping expand access to learning well beyond traditional campuses.
Today, the CLSC remains active through annual reading selections, author conversations, and community discussion at Chautauqua. Its long life gives it a special place in American literary culture: part book club, part educational movement, and part living link to the broader Chautauqua tradition.
