Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle

Founded in 1878, this pioneering reading circle helped bring serious study and shared reading to people far from colleges and universities. It remains one of America’s oldest continuously operating book clubs, with a long connection to the broader Chautauqua tradition.

About the author

The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, often called the CLSC, is not an individual author but a historic American reading and education program. It was created in 1878 at the Chautauqua Institution and was designed to encourage guided reading, home study, and lifelong learning, especially for people who did not have easy access to higher education.

Over time, the CLSC became known as one of the oldest continuously operating book clubs in the United States. Its early program blended literature, science, history, and the arts, reflecting the wider Chautauqua movement’s belief that learning should be open, practical, and shared.

Today, the circle continues through Chautauqua’s literary programming, including annual reading selections and author talks. For listeners and readers, the CLSC name carries a sense of tradition: a community built around books, curiosity, and the pleasure of reading together.
