by Carme Karr
Born in Barcelona in 1865, Carme Karr was a Catalan writer, journalist, musicologist, and composer who became one of the most prominent feminist voices in early 20th-century Catalonia. She wrote in both literary and journalistic forms and is often noted for combining cultural criticism with a practical argument for women’s education and independence.
She is especially associated with the magazine Feminal, which she edited and helped turn into an important platform for women’s writing, social debate, and modern ideas about women’s public role. Alongside her journalism, she also published fiction and essays, building a body of work that linked literature with social change.
Karr died in Barcelona in 1943. Today she is remembered not only as an author, but as a key figure in Catalan cultural life whose writing pushed for women to have fuller intellectual, artistic, and professional lives.
