Born in Amsterdam on February 26, 1877, he became known as a Dutch socialist poet. He was the son of an art dealer, studied medicine for two years, then left university to follow literary and artistic work instead.
Before he was financially independent, he worked for the Dutch Drama Society and in an art gallery. He also wrote for socialist circles and is remembered not only for poetry but for plays as well, including works later preserved by Project Gutenberg.
He died in Bergen, North Holland, on May 6, 1924. His writing is often noted for combining idealism, music, and social commitment, which helps explain why he still stands out in accounts of Dutch literary history.
