Born in Boston on June 1, 1827, Caroline Snowden Whitmarsh Guild wrote under the name C. S. Guild. She published for young readers as well as for families and schools, and sources consistently describe her as an American writer active in children’s literature and religious writing.
Her best-known books include fairy tales such as Violet: A Fairy Story and Daisy; or, The Fairy Spectacles. She also wrote the Summer-House Series, a set of science-themed books for younger readers, showing how comfortably she moved between storytelling and simple, instructive nonfiction.
Guild also edited or compiled hymn and prayer collections, including Hymns and Rhymes for Home and School, Prayers of the Ages, and Hymns of the Ages. She died on August 6, 1898, in Roxbury, leaving behind a body of work that feels warm, earnest, and closely tied to the moral and educational ideals of her time.
