About the author

Caroline Snowden Whitmarsh Guild, who also published as C. S. Guild, was an American writer born in Boston on June 1, 1827, and died on August 6, 1898. Sources found for her identify her as the author of children's books, including fairy stories, and also as a compiler of hymns and other religious works.

She is especially remembered for imaginative books such as Violet and for the science-themed Summer-House Series, which brought educational subjects to younger readers in an approachable way. Biographical references also note that she later married James Guild, after which she was known as Caroline Snowden Guild.

Although she is not widely known today, her books show an appealing mix of fantasy, instruction, and moral reflection that was characteristic of much 19th-century writing for families and children.
