by Boris Karloff
Born William Henry Pratt in London in 1887, Boris Karloff turned away from a planned career in the consular service to pursue acting. After performing with touring companies in Canada and the United States, he adopted the stage name Boris Karloff and eventually made his way to Hollywood.
His breakthrough came with Frankenstein (1931), where his sympathetic performance as the Monster made him a horror icon. He returned to the role in Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein, and also appeared in films including The Mummy, The Mask of Fu Manchu, and The Body Snatcher. Beyond horror, he worked extensively on stage and television and voiced both the Grinch and the narrator in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966).
