About the author

Born in Mattoon, Illinois, in 1901, Bernadine Bailey spent most of her life in the Chicago area and earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago. She worked for Chicago publishers and later wrote freelance, building a career that crossed journalism, travel writing, and children's literature.

Bailey traveled extensively and wrote about health, medicine, politics, and life abroad for publications including Reader's Digest, Today’s Health, Travel, the Chicago Tribune, and The New York Times. She also served as president of the Illinois Woman’s Press Association during the World War II years.
