About the author

Born in Leipzig, Benedikte Naubert is described by Deutsche Biographie as a German writer who received an unusually broad education for her time. After her father's early death, she was taught by her mother and older brothers, studied classical languages, philosophy, and history, and also taught herself English, French, and Italian.

She published her first novel, Heerfort und Klärchen, at age 27 and went on to produce more than 50 novels as well as novellas and fairy tales. Her works were issued anonymously, something not uncommon then, but it also meant they were often attributed to male writers before her identity became public late in her life.

Naubert is especially remembered for the way she combined historical sources and chronicle material with imagined personal stories, helping develop a newer form of historical fiction. According to Deutsche Biographie, her writing had a lasting indirect influence on the structure and storytelling methods of later historical novels.
