About the author

Born in Hungary on September 23, 1865, she moved with her family through Brussels and Paris before settling in London. She studied art there, exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy, and later turned to writing, bringing a vivid visual sense to her fiction.

Her great breakthrough came with The Scarlet Pimpernel. First successful as a play and then published as a novel in 1905, it introduced Sir Percy Blakeney, the seemingly idle English gentleman who secretly rescues people from the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. The character became enormously popular and inspired many sequels, helping establish the model of the modern disguised hero.

She wrote widely beyond that famous series, including plays and detective stories, but The Scarlet Pimpernel remains the work most closely tied to her name. She died in London on November 12, 1947, leaving behind one of the most enduring adventure figures in popular fiction.
