About the author
Born in Hungary on September 23, 1865, Emmuska Orczy moved with her family to Western Europe and later settled in England. She studied art in London before turning to writing, and that visual background helped give her fiction a vivid, theatrical feel.
Her lasting fame rests on The Scarlet Pimpernel, first produced as a play and then published as a novel in the early 1900s. The story of Sir Percy Blakeney — an English gentleman hiding a heroic secret identity — became an enormous popular success and influenced generations of masked and double-life heroes in adventure fiction.
Orczy wrote far beyond one famous book. Along with historical adventures, she published detective fiction, including stories featuring the mysterious “Old Man in the Corner,” and she continued writing for decades. She died in England in 1947, but her fast-moving plots and flair for suspense have kept her work in print ever since.
