Description

The story opens amid the turbulent aftermath of Napoleon’s triumph over Prussia, when the new emperor faces a flood of petitions from exiled nobles yearning to return to a France that has reshaped itself under imperial rule. Among them are the proud Mortain family and the determined Courson line, whose pleas spark a fierce clash between the compassionate, war‑weary Napoleon and his formidable Minister of Police, Fouché, whose shadow looms over every decision.

As the emperor’s fleeting mercy grants clemency, the narrative follows the young Marquis de Mortain and the spirited daughter Fernande de Courson as they navigate a court rife with suspicion, secret alliances, and the ever‑watchful eyes of a police chief who bends loyalties to suit his own designs. Their struggle to reclaim a place in a nation still haunted by revolution sets the stage for a vivid portrait of ambition, loyalty, and the price of power in a France on the brink of a new empire.
